Free radicals in carcinogenesis.
نویسنده
چکیده
It has become clear since the workshop that free radicals are implicated not only in the promotion phase of carcinogenesis but during initiation as well. Since the workshop, however, despite intriguing trapping studies with Superoxide disimilase. catalase, and Cu-DIPS [copper(II)(3,5-diisopropylsalicylate)2] and generation of OJ using xanthine oxidase, little substantive evidence has been obtained concerning the nature or mode of action of "oxygen free radicals" or any other free radical species

Peroxyl free radicals: potential mediators of tumor initiation and promotion.
In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in the involvement of free radicals in carcinogenesis (1 -4) . This seems a natural outgrowth of the long overdue realization that free radicals are formed in biological systems and that they contribute significantly to physiological and pathological processes. Much of the emphasis of research linking free radicals and cancer has focused ...
متن کاملOxidative stress and experimental carcinogenesis.
The focus of this review is to provide state-of-the-art knowledge on the involvement of oxygen free radicals (OFR) in carcinogenesis with a particular reference to skin model system as the process of cancer development is best understood in this organ. However, a brief description of the role of OFR in other organs is also provided. The term OFR refers to forms of oxygen exhibiting high reactiv...
متن کاملCigarette smoke radicals and the role of free radicals in chemical carcinogenicity.
This article consists of two parts: a brief overview of the ways in which free radicals can be involved in chemical carcinogenesis, and a review of cigarette smoke chemistry. Carcinogenesis is generally agreed to involve at least three stages: initiation, promotion, and progression. It is suggested that radicals sometimes are involved in the initiation step, either in the oxidative activation o...
متن کاملReactive Oxygen Species and Their Relation to Carcinogenesis
Oxygen reactive free radicals, more known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) have dual nature. On the one hand, they necessary for normal function of the cell, but on the other side when ROS is in excess can be mediators of damage to cell structures and this harmful effect is termed oxidative stress. The organism counteracts to ROS by the action of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants systems...
متن کاملInvolvement of free radicals in breast cancer
Researchers have recently shown an increased interest in free radicals and their role in the tumor microenvironment. Free radicals are molecules with high instability and reactivity due to the presence of an odd number of electrons in the outermost orbit of their atoms. Free radicals include reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, which are key players in the initiation and progression of tumor c...
